Live Dealer Blackjack in Canada

blackjack v1Remember the very first time you played Blackjack at a Canadian online casino and got dealt in by a living, breathing dealer? How different it was to see digitally created cards appear on screen with no one else to witness and celebrate your glorious Blackjack hands? Rules may be the same but the experience certainly isn’t.

Playing Live Blackjack via the internet is almost identical to gambling at a land-based establishment.

You can take a seat at a table occupied by one or more other players, observe their gameplay (potentially learning from their successes and failures), and converse with the dealer who’ll always ask for your next decision and never fail to congratulate for beating the house.

You may well know what we’re talking about or it could be you have yet to find an online casino that welcomes Canadian players and at the same time provides this exceptional experience.

In this article, we’ll help you do just that and instead of presenting you with a random selection of brands, our top list will consist of live blackjack sites that actually focus on their live dealer games and have something to offer that “moves the needle” in the niche.

To consider a casino as a top tier live blackjack destination, it should fit most, if not all, of the following criteria.

Table & Supplier

There are nearly a dozen worthwhile live blackjack developers out there. Any great casino should host games from one or more of the top-tier providers (Evolution, NetEnt and Playtech) and then a few from others such as BetConstruct, Lucky Streak or Pragmatic Play.

Outside of the top three, doesn’t mean their blackjack offerings are bad at all – just that they have a few problems or faults that the others don’t. Sometimes they have unique ideas or takes on this classic game that makes them well worth checking out anyway.

Lastly, variety should also apply to the types of table. There should be unlimited player tables for peak times, tables with low and high limits and a range of special bets and features.:

Welcome Bonus Applicable to Live Blackjack

Live casino fans should be aware that many traditional online casino bonuses are next to useless for live casino players.

This is because of wagering requirements, which make players wager through their initial deposit a certain number of times before withdrawals become available.

Not a big problem usually. However, live blackjack and other games in the live casino often come with a lower house edge.

That means the casinos will often reduce the contribution of any wagers on these games to the playthrough requirement, as players are more likely to win more often here than on slots for example.

In fact, many casinos will give a big fat zero percent contribution on live casino wagers meaning they bonus funds are almost pointless to use in the live casino.

However, there are a few casinos that do offer 100% wager contributions through a live casino specific bonus.

So, if you find one of these live dealer, or even blackjack, specific welcome bonuses – it should definitely be considered a top-tier attraction.

Private or Exclusive Tables

Live blackjack is massively popular online. This means many casinos want to fit in as many tables as they can – especially at peak times.

One way to add to your casinos blackjack collection, is to collaborate with one of the major developers to add custom-branded tables. Often these are set in an entirely new studio, with every detail managed by the host casino. That goes from the décor, to the hosts outfits, the rules of the table, the bet limits and more.

The developer who does the most of these exclusive tables is Evolution Gaming. The casino that has crested the most of them for blackjack, is Unibet.

Flexible Betting Limits

Live online blackjack has a lot of fans, from all over the world and all sections of society. Casinos need to fit their limits in line with a diverse range of players.

Even high-rolling players might want to bet low sometimes, and even low-budget fans might go on a winning streak and up their ante.

Casinos should offer blackjack bets between £0.50 and thousands of GBP per hand as standard. Some high-rolling tables, such as Evolution’s Salon Prive go as high as £20,000 per hand.

Bettors who are willing to play with Bitcoin can find even higher limits than that, although using cryptocurrency casinos is definitely not for everyone.

Fast & Convenient Withdrawals

When you go on a triple blackjack hand streak, you want your winnings in your bank account in a timely and orderly fashion.

Of course, most players should understand the need for security. Still, Know Your Customer procedures should take no longer than they absolutely have to.

After that, you should expect a top casino to process your withdrawal request within 24-hours.

A range of options is also important, with e-wallets such as PayPal or Neteller being the fastest (often instant) choice available.

A truly excellent online casino will never have fees for withdrawals or deposits either.

Differences Between Live Blackjack Tables

Drawing Rules

Though basic rules apply everywhere, not all Live Blackjack variants are the same. Depending on the provider, the game may play with different number of decks, feature different rules for splitting and doubling, offer different side bets or none at all. Some support Bet Behind functionality when all seats are taken while others don’t. The dealer may be peaking to check if they’ve got a Blackjack or may not. It’s important to be aware of the specifics of the game you’ve chosen to join; they could impact the way you play as well as the house edge, so let’s make sure you’re properly informed.

You’ll find that the house edge is the highest at ViG tables (0.78%) and the lowest in Playtech’s Live Blackjack (0.55%), with games powered by other developers falling in between these two. One would normally want to select one with the best odds but there may be other elements which will entice the player to choose another.

Why is the number of decks important? Back in the 60’s, popular Vegas casinos were all using a single deck and we didn’t take long to discover the advantage which can be gained by counting cards. Keeping a tally of low and high-value cards dealt up to a certain point provides an insight into the composition of cards yet to be dealt, thus allowing players to make better decisions. A high concentration of high-value cards within those remaining will give you a better chance of hitting a Blackjack, winning by doubling on 9, 10 or 11, or splitting high cards. At the same time, it will improve the chances that the dealer holding a total of 12-18 will bust. Switching to two, four, six and finally eight decks has made card counting far more difficult and increased the house edge. Live Blackjack games powered by Evolution Gaming, Vivo, Lucky Streak, Playtech, Pragmatic Play and Ezugi all use 8 decks, while NetEnt and ViG games play with 6 decks.

Splitting and doubling rules also matter as these options provide an opportunity to improve the value of your hand. Players are offered to double their bets and consequently receive a single additional card, and most if not all Live Blackjack providers will allow you to Double no matter what your starting hand. If your initial two cards happen to be of the same value, you can Split them into two separate hands and bet an amount equal to your original wager on each. You can then opt to Stand or Hit multiple times – unless we’re talking Aces, in which case a single card is dealt to each split Ace. Most developers will let you Split only once but re-splitting is allowed when playing Vivo Gaming Live Blackjack. Evolution and Pragmatic Play won’t let you Double after Split but the others will.

Some Live Blackjack games also offer a Surrender option which allows players to abandon a weak hand without having to forfeit the entire investment. In Ezugi’s and ViG’s Blackjack games, players can protect their bet by purchasing Insurance against the dealer’s Blackjack (as in many other game variants) or Surrender to receive half of their wager back without playing any further. NetEnt’s Live Blackjack also includes Even Money option which you can take to collect 1:1 if you have Blackjack and the dealer scores an Ace. Visionary iGaming additionally features a Blackjack variant which offers an Early Payout each time your hand changes; it’s an opportunity to secure a payout or cut your losses, and if you choose to take it, you’ll exit the game before any more cards are dealt.

Another thing worth mentioning is that in all Live Blackjack games the dealer has to stand on all 17; the only exception is those produced by Visionary iGaming. In ViG’s Blackjack, your opponent will hit on soft 17 and stand on hard 17.

Betting Limits and Play Limitations

The betting limits you will find with live dealer blackjack will not differ greatly from those you will find when playing traditional online casino blackjack. Compared to a live casino, however, the limits you will find are great because they are a bit more lenient. In most brick and mortar casinos, it would be shocking to see a minimum wager lower than €20. At most live dealer online blackjack tables however, the required betting minimum will usually be between $1 and $5.

This lends itself to recreational players who aren’t necessarily looking to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars playing blackjack.

As for playing limitations, it is generally more difficult to play multiple positions at a single live dealer table. Most software providers will allow for players to play multiple positions, however there will be plenty of occasions where there are not enough open positions for this to become a possibility.

Side Bets Offered

Because live dealer blackjack has brought about variations of the game that can only be found online, it is only right that we discuss the side bets and other unique features you might encounter. For example, software provider Evolution Gaming offers a live dealer game known as Infinite Blackjack, where the same hand is dealt to an infinite number of players.

From then on, each player can act individually and choose when to hit, stand, double, or place side bets. Some of the side bets for Infinite Blackjack are simple, such as Any Pair. With Any Pair, players who have made this side bet will win when the first two cards dealt form a pair.

All things considered, side bets are a way to make a somewhat bland game like blackjack a bit more exciting.

The Dealers

This may be obvious, but one of the biggest differences between live dealer blackjack and any other form of the game online is the fact that there are real, live dealers who are dealing cards, interacting with players, and generally helping the game function.

Unlike the computerized version of blackjack that we have had for more than two decades, the fact that human dealers oversee the game is something we have never seen before.
If you are so inclined, you can even tip dealers who have treated you well, dealt you winning cards, or for any other reason.

Top Live Blackjack Providers

Evolution Gaming

Standard Evolution Gaming tables are the benchmark for other live blackjack providers.

They use an eight-deck shoe and allow insurance bets with the dealer peeking for blackjack. However, they don’t offer the surrender option.

There’s also the standard side bets available:

  • 21+3
  • Perfect Pairs

21+3 bets on the likelihood of your hand and the dealer’s combining to make various poker hands. The payout goes up as the hands become rarer and more valuable in Poker. It maxes out at 40:1 for a straight flush.

Perfect Pairs pays out if your hand makes a pair – 25:1 for a Perfect Pair (Same Color, Same Suit), 12:1 for a colored pair and 6:1 for any pair.

As well as their fairly standard rules, everything about Evolution’s dealers and gameplay is top-tier. You’ll be welcomed by your username – pro tip: go for something funny so the dealer has to awkwardly read it out – and the user experience is finely crafted for simplicity and ease.

That goes for mobile and desktop users, with Evolution’s live tables all tuned nicely for mobile play.

Evolution also works with casinos to produce private, branded tables and also a few special blackjack variants such as:

  • Infinite Blackjack (a Common Draw game)
  • Blackjack Party (a high tempo game with two hosts, found in various languages)
  • Salon Prive Tables (high-rolling tables for one player at a time – usually bets start at $1000)

For a deeper look at those special blackjack tables, see our complete section on them below.

A great variety of tables with extremely smooth experiences, makes Evolution the top dog in the live blackjack streaming game at the moment.

Ezugi

Ezugi is another live dealer software provider that has been around for almost as long as live dealer games have, having been founded in 2012. The company now operates 9 studios, all of which operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Ezugi is based in Europe and Latin America, however it caters to players from all over the world, including in Spain.

Like Evolution, Ezugi also offers a blackjack game that does not keep players waiting around for a table position to open up. Unlimited 21 Blackjack is a game where just one set of cards is dealt to every single player who has elected to buy-in and place a wager. Each player can choose whether to hit, stand, or take any other action.

Playtech

This Israeli game developer is in one of the oldest companies in the live casino business, having been supplying online casino games since 1999.

Today, Playtech live blackjack tables are helpfully split into four categories:

  • Lounge
  • Unlimited
  • Soiree
  • Grand or Royale

Lounge Blackjack is Playtech’s standard tables. They play either a ‘European’ (Dealer gets one-hole card and can’t peek) or American (dealer gets two cards and can peek, with insurance offered on a possible dealer blackjack).

However, the option to surrender is not available at either table.

Playtech side bets are the standard 21+3 and Perfect Pairs. Only one split is allowed, and the dealer must stand on all 17s.

Lastly, we come to Playtech’s special tables. Soiree Tables are their answer to Evolution’s Salon Prive, in that they are high-limit tables for only one player at a time.

A unique variation here, is that players with a sufficient balance ($1000+) can request to change the dealer or have a particularly favoured dealer stay on for a longer shift. Obviously, there are limits – but this can definitely give players a true VIP feel.

Grand or Royale tables are just high-limit tables with ‘classier’ décor. In this case, that means a lot of gold and shininess.

This was a little bit gaudy in this reviewer’s opinion, but some high-rollers will no doubt find Playtech’s style here very suitable

Disco Jack is Playtech’s answer to Evolution’s Party Blackjack tables, with even more up-tempo lights, music and conversational hosts. For players who are looking for some extra social excitement, or just a fast and furious blackjack session, Disco Jack could be the perfect fit.

Overall, with crisp streaming, easy-to-use interfaces and some unique variants on the classic 21 theme, Playtech are deserving of a spot in the top three live blackjack developers.

Pragmatic Play Live

NetEnt

Swedish developer NetEntertainment have chosen to go the green screen route for their live casino titles, which instantly differentiates them from the competition. Some may prefer the increased sophistication and elegance this offers, but others may feel less immersed as the background is not as real.

Standard NetEnt blackjack is a six shoe game where the dealer can peek for blackjack if they pull an ace on the first card.

NetEnt blackjack also offers two side bets, the standard 21+3 being one. The other is Double Jacks – similar to the Perfect Pairs bet, but only for Jacks. This adds a little to the expected house edge, making it very slightly higher than Evolution’s tables.

NetEnt offers two special tables:

  • Common Draw Blackjack
  • Live Beyond Live Experience

As far as we know, NetEnt were the first developer to create a Common Draw Blackjack table. This allows an infinite number of players to play at the same table, using one hand at a time.

Other developers, including Playtech and Evolution, have since created their own versions of this game – as it means casinos can fit in even more blackjack players at peak times.

However, this does take some decision making away from the players. For example, some hands are auto split.

This only happens when it would be advantageous to the player, but some blackjack fans just don’t like splitting. If you don’t want to split the hand and others do, you can take 20% of your bet back and the hand finishes for you only.

Unlike other providers NetEnt Blackjack tables also don’t have their own separate lobby. The only way to access their other tables at a given casino is through a drop-down lobby on the table.

This can put some strain on lower-end devices but makes sense for NetEnt as they don’t such a high number of tables as, say, Evolution.

Betconstruct

BetConstruct’s live blackjack offering actually surprised us with its top quality action. The stream quality is great, the user interface is nice and simple – and they even had some unique ideas to bring to the table (so to speak).

Chief among these is a unique side bet, known as the Lucky 7s. It pays out for various combinations of 7s, in the following manner:

  • One seven pays out 3:1
  • Pair of sevens (different suits) pays 25:1
  • Pair of suited sevens – 50:1
  • Three unsuited sevens – 100:1
  • Three suited sevens – 500:1

Then there’s also the Honey Bonus, which is basically the same 21+3 bet from other developers’ tables, but also includes a suited blackjack pay-out. This gives you an extra 3 to 1 win should you pull the lucky 21 combo with this side bet on.

As for the standard rules, BetConstruct tables use 7-deck shoes with the full American rules. That means surrenders and insurance bets are both on offer.

There’re no special tables from BetConstruct, but they do offer live blackjack in languages you might not find from any other developer. These include Armenian, Turkish, Farsi, Ukrainian and Russian – alongside the standard English.

As for the negatives, BetConstruct live blackjack tables don’t count amongst them an unlimited version and there’s no bet behind function either. This means some players might be out of luck for a seat at peak times.

The live dealers themselves, while perfectly competent at the functions of the game, were also less enthusiastic than some of their counterparts at Evolution or Playtech for example.

A strong showing with some unique ideas then from BetConstruct, but overall just lacking a little in a few areas.

Vivo Gaming

Vivo Gaming has been part of the online gaming scene since 2010. Like Evolution Gaming, Vivo also produces only live dealer products, but thanks to partnerships established with BetSoft and a few other developers, the company is also able to offer hundreds of RNG games. Vivo’s charming dealers are extensively trained before they’ll face you for the very first time.

These ladies and gentlemen  are also continuously monitored and their performance regularly evaluated. You may be already familiar with Vivo’s Live Roulette, Blackjack and Baccarat which are regularly featured at partner sites, but may not know that the same company has also developed Live Craps, Sic Bo, Dragon Tiger and Poker.

Vivo Live Blackjack plays with 8 decks, the dealer has to hit on 16 or less, and players can Double Down and receive one additional card or Split pairs followed by a Hit, Stand or Double (the latter not applying to split Aces). Insurance becomes available when the dealer’s up-card is an Ace, after which your host will peak to check for Blackjack. To test live dealer games by Vivo, head to Unique Casino.

Lucky Streak

Lucky Streak was established in 2014 and is thus one of the new(er) kids on the block. Even so, the company has managed to recruit a good number of fans from different parts of the world thanks to a well-designed, user-friendly interface, just the right amount of in-game options, and engaging and attentive dealers. Lucky Streak live gaming portfolio consists of Live Roulette, Blackjack and Baccarat.

Live Blackjack uses 8 decks and supports splitting (two initial cards of the same value) and doubling. The dealer peeks to check if they have scored a Blackjack, but before they do, players will be offered to purchase Insurance which costs half of the initial wager and pays 2:1.

One can place two kinds of optional side bets – 21+3 and Perfect Pair. Unique Casino hosts 4 Lucky Streak Blackjack tables with limits ranging between $10 and $2,500, and you can also play the game at Dublinbet and Casino Estrella.

Branded Live Blackjack Tables

As previously mentioned, many casinos like to run their own custom branded blackjack tables. Often, with the help of a live casino developer, they even create their own private studio to run them from.

The developer that makes the most of these custom or private tables for casinos is Evolution Gaming.

The casino that has the most custom blackjack tables is Unibet, with 30 in their selection.

Mr Green

Mr. Green rolls up with nine custom blackjack tables from Evolution, which can be conveniently found together in the Mr. Green section of the Evolution lobby.

They all look smart with a nice blue and green color scheme, as well as the same quality presentation and gameplay you’d expect from Evolution.

There are 4 standard tables with $5-$1000 limits and 3 VIP tables, known as Club Royale tables. These start at $10 and go up to $5000 a hand.

Also available are exclusive Mr. Green live blackjack tables with Spanish and German speaking dealers.

Leo Vegas

This self-proclaimed mobile-specialist online casino features a reasonable 12 custom Leo Vegas live blackjack tables, courtesy of Evolution Gaming. They all look nice enough, with Leo’s pink and cream color scheme taking the forefront.

What they don’t have in quantity though, they make up for in variety. Leo Vegas’ custom tables include:

Sports Blackjack

Leo Blackjack Show (with Italian speaking live dealers)

Leo Vegas Silent Blackjack (a very quiet table with a serious atmosphere)

Danish Live Blackjack

As you can see, that’s a fair few twists on the classic 21 format. This demonstrates how much space is available for innovation when creating private live dealer studios rather nicely.

Limits don’t go too high however, with a maximum bet of $5000 on the VIP custom tables.

Unibet

Unibet comes through with a huge 30 private blackjack tables from Evolution. Unibet makes great use of their brand color scheme and identity throughout, and it is also the biggest collection online that we know of.

Each table is decked out in a futuristic black and green, with Unibet advertisements for new promotions or their mobile app popping up on screens behind the dealer.

They really do look excellent and are a prime example of how good private live studios can be. At least it is visually – we would have liked some special variations or native language tables to top of an extensive collection.

One of the other plus points at Unibet, is the high limits on some of these private tables. Whereas the standard Evo tables max out at $20,000 a hand – the Unibet Exclusive VIP tables go up to £50,000.

That’s one of the highest limits you’ll find at on online casino. It makes Unibet’s private tables the perfect destination for the most high-rolling of blackjack players.

Betsson

This Swedish casino has 20 exclusive blackjack tables from Evolution. However, they don’t go all out on the branding – most of them look quite similar to standard Evolution tables.

Uniquely, they also have their one exclusive version of Evolution’s Salon Prive table as well, which is great for high-rolling players. Although, again, it is basically the same décor as Evolution’s standard design.

They also feature blackjack tables in Swedish, Finnish and Suomi, as well as a German table with the full Betsson colour scheme. This is the best-looking custom table from the Betsson collection.

Bets start at $5 per hand and go as high as $20,000 on their exclusive VIP table.

Royal Panda

Royal Panda has three custom tables from Evolution Gaming. Two of these are packed with Royal Panda details, branding and colour schemes. The third is sadly lacking and looks basically the same as Evolution’s standard tables.

Bets start at $5 and go as up to $10,000 a hand on the Royal Panda VIP table.

European Blackjack vs American Blackjack

European and American Blackjack are two main live game versions you’re most likely to come across when visiting a Spanish online casino. Understanding the differences between them is crucial as they could (and should) impact the way you play.

To start with, American Blackjack normally plays with only 2 decks while European Blackjack uses 6 or 8. As mentioned above, the larger the number of decks, the higher the house edge. In either version, the dealer receives two cards to start with, but in American Blackjack they will get both immediately – one facing up and the other (so-called hole card) face down. This allows them to peek and check for Blackjack when the up card happens to be an Ace.

In case they do score the strongest hand, the round ends without players being asked to make any further decisions. In European Blackjack, the dealer will receive their second card only after you and the other players have opted to Stand, Hit, Double or Split. As peeking is not possible, you could theoretically lose larger amounts having decided to Split or Double only to be surprised by the dealer’s Blackjack.

European Blackjack allows players to Double Down on hand values of 9, 10 or 11, while American Blackjack lets them do it on any total and frequently also after splitting. When playing the European variant, one can Split only once and only identical 10-value cards (10’s, Jacks, Queens, Kings), while the American version allows them to Split any pair up to 3 times.

Finally, there is a difference when it comes to Surrender option which, when available, lets you exit a round prematurely and thus minimize your losses. If you believe your initial two cards form a poor hand, you can choose to take 50% of your wager back rather than lose it all. That is, you can do it if playing American Blackjack; European Blackjack does not support this option. You’ll find it available in both ViG and Ezugi games.

Live Blackjack Side Bets

To make the game more interesting and increase its win potential, developers are including various side bets which one can choose to place or play without. They have to be placed after regular Blackjack bets and before any cards have been dealt. Side bets regularly feature lower RTP than the main game but are still frequently used as they can pay significantly larger amounts than the best main game outcome.

Perfect Pairs and 21+3 are the two most commonly featured Blackjack side wagers. Perfect Pair bet wins if your first two cards form a pair and pays depending on whether these cards are of same suit and/or colour. In Evolution’s Live Blackjack, you’ll win 25:1 for a Perfect Pair (a pair of the same suit and colour), 12:1 for a Coloured Pair (same colour, different suit), and 6:1 for a Mixed Pair (different colour, different suits).

NetEnt’s Blackjack pays 30:1 for a Perfect Pair but delivers only 10:1 for a Coloured Pair and 5:1 for a Mixed Pair. In order to win Perfect Pair side bet in Lucky Streak game, cards need to be identical and will then deliver a payout of 25:1.

The 21+3 bet wins when your first two cards and the dealer’s up card form a poker-like combo. When playing Live Blackjack powered by Evolution Gaming, you’ll win 100:1 for Suited Trips, 40:1 for Straight Flush, 30:1 for Three of a Kind, 10:1 for Straight, and 5:1 for Flush. NetEnt’s Blackjack follows the same logic though with slightly different payouts, while Lucky Streak Blackjack pays 9:1 no matter which of these combinations you manage to score.

Live Blackjack Tables That Stand Out

All of the abovementioned software providers offer standard, 7-seat live blackjack games, but as we have briefly touched upon up to this point, some of them offer unique spins on the classic game as well. Infinite Blackjack, as offered by Evolution, is a game that never requires a player to wait around for a position to open up. Infinite Blackjack offers players a live dealer blackjack game for players at all hours of any night or day.

Free Bet Blackjack is another interest live variation of the game that you will find at an ever-growing number of live dealer casinos. Though the name may insinuate that you are able to play (and win) hands of blackjack without ever having to risk your own money, the reality is that splits and doubles are what end up being free of charge. This may not be quite as great as a completely free hand of blackjack, but players will take free splits and doubles every time.

All Bets Blackjack offered by Playtech is another interesting and new spin on the classic game. So long as you follow basic strategy that you can find anywhere online, you will find that All Bets Blackjack offers a lower house edge than traditional blackjack games.
